Come si accorda l'arpa? | How to tune the harp?

One of the first activities of every harpist, in addition to starting to study the technique, is knowing how to tune correctly.

Before going into the merits of each type of harp, there are some general guidelines to observe.

The use of the key to tune. Usually they are of two shapes to L and to T see photo. Many concert harp keys are rubberized and black to prevent them from falling out and damaging the soundboard.

Accordatura Moderna | Modern Tuning

The key fits into the joint and is rotated, after plucking the string :

– turning counterclockwise towards the harp column shortens the string and therefore the sound is more acute, it is needed if the symbol (b) flashes in red on the tuner, and we hear by ear that the sound is waning.

– turning clockwise towards the sound box, the string stretches, so the sound is lower, this rotation is useful if the symbol (#) flashes in red on the tuner and we perceive a sound that is increasing.

When the tuner line is at the 0 symbol and flashes green, it means that the string is perfectly in tune.

(DOb- REb-MIb-FAb- SOLb- LAb- SIb)
  • arpa celtica ( arpa a levette), la frequenza indicativa è 440 e viene accordata in Mib  Maggiore (MIb-FA-SOL-LAb- SIb- DO- RE)
  • arpa diatonica (senza levette), la frequenza indicativa è 440 e viene accordata in Do Maggiore (DO-RE-MI-FA-SOL-LA-SI)

The tuner must be chromatic, that is, it must perceive all 12 musical notes, so don’t buy a guitar tuner or similar.

Letters will appear on the screen I write their correspondence:

C (do) D (re) E (mi) F (fa) G (g) A (la) B (si) b (flat); # (sharp)

In this way, depending on your harp, you will have to tune to different calibers and different tones depending on the type:

pedal harp, the indicative frequency is 442 and is tuned in Dob Major with the pedals at rest. (DOb- REb-MIb-FAb- SOLb- LAb- SIb)
Celtic harp (lever harp), the indicative frequency is 440 and is tuned in Eb Major (Eb-F-G-LAb-Bb-DO-RE)
diatonic harp (without levers), the indicative caliber is 440 and is tuned in C Major (C-D-E-F-G-A-B)
chromatic harp 6/6, the indicative frequency is 440 and has two tailpieces on one tunes in the hex tonal scale of C (C-D-E-F # -SOL # -LA #) and on the second tailpiece it tunes in the hextonal scale of DO # (DO # -RE # -FA-SOL-LA-SI)
there are also medieval harps, triple tailpiece baroque harps and many other types of historical harps it is advisable to ask for information on the frequency directly from the luthier who rebuilt it).

Accordatura Tradizionale | Traditional Tuning

Traditional tuning consists in tuning the central A with the corresponding diapason of the instrument and then tuning the central octave by ear for intervals of 4th, 5th and octave and then moving on to the treble and bass.

This type of tuning is very suitable for those who play in modern contexts and need to tune during sound checks and with nearby amplified instruments or which naturally have a greater sound than that of the harp.

Using an electric piezo clamp and better in contact, it is possible to isolate the sound of the soundbox of the harp, before it disperses in the air and even tune while other instruments are in full activity, therefore in silent mode, that is playing pianissimo and connecting the piezo in contact with a chromatic tuner pedal.

  • per l’accordatore puoi scaricare sul telefonino un’applicazione, io vi consiglio, Chromatic Tuner della Boss;
XD

Have you lost the tuner or the key?

There are two tricks to solve the problem:

for the tuner you can download an application, I recommend, Chromatic Tuner by Boss on your mobile;
for the key you can buy a key to tune the drum heads with a hole and add it to your keychain. They are cheap, some are even 2 euros. So you will always have a spare key in your bag. I hope you don’t lose your keychain or the bag too. XD
